Quake growth was in large part due to groups of ppl playing in
network mode via IPX. Then as Internet access became more common
the game companies saw the demand and started putting up their
own servers for ppl to play against each other. Sadly in the case
of Battle.Net the network is overburdened and it's only getting
worse.
