One possibility is to use a bulletin board instead of or in addition to a mailing list, but in the end there is no way to filter out spam messages unless the list is restricted (subscriber-posts-only or moderated). What bothers me more than the spam, though, is that the netrek mailing list archives are consistently mined for email addresses. My work email address got accidentally archived on vanilla-list, and no less than 24 hours had passed when I got 3 messages advertising porno when I've had none before.
