I think it will die if the machine > has no sound configured; I'm not sure if it needs the dev files Sound shouldn't have any effect. Try deleting the sound server and see if it still seg faults. It is probably glibc compatibility problems. glibc doesn't support static linking, and I've had to go to great trouble to produce a static binary.
