The primary idea behind using a 3D engine is to get scaling and rotations for free, as well as pre-built mechanisms for a variety of effects. Remember, I simply want to upgrade the presentation here, not alter the gameplay. 3D for 3D's sake is definitely a distraction ans should be avoided. As for system requirements, the amount of processing needed for Netrek even in 3D would be very small compared to most 3D games out there.
